October is over but breast cancer awareness continues

pink ribbon postOctober is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  This annual campaign is to increase awareness of the disease.

Breast cancer awareness must be monthly not just the month of October. Ladies don’t think you should get mammograms only in the month of October.

While most women are aware of breast cancer, many women forget to take the necessary steps to detect the disease in its early stages. Daily self exams can’t be stressed enough to women.

Self exams are the first line of defense in early detection.  Women can examine themselves when taking a shower, bath, or putting on a bra. Self exams are easy and free, here are keys tips.

Squeeze the nipples; check for discharge and lumps

With your fingers, move around your entire breast in a circular pattern moving from the outside to the center, checking the entire breast and armpit ; the goal is to feel for any lump, thickening, or hardened knot

Look at the breast to see if there is discoloration, dents, or dimpling

If you notice any of these signs or feel weird call your doctor or hospital to inquire where you can get a free mammogram. Progress has been made in the fight to end breast cancer but there is still a long way to go.

Ladies let’s encourage friends and family members to do daily self exams.
